Hey2..hey.. eh, forgot.. assa’kum n salam sejahtera… what’s up? We meet again in my 6^th posting. It’s my last posting for my assignment for the Language and Information Technology course. Hoho. Don’t worry ae.. to be honest this blog was started to complete the demand of this course. If it wasn’t for this course requirement i would never thought i will have my own blog. Ya2. I am kind of computer literacy person. Hehehe.. i am doing blog here as part of assignments in this semester. This quite fun.. huhu.. ok, enough with that. Let’s see what i am gonna discuss in this posting.. now i gonna give my opinion about questions below.

        i.            Do you think that blogging activity improves your writing skill? If yes what area if not why?

o   Through blogging i really agree that it helps me improve my writing in English. It obvious i was required to do many assignments and all those assignments were in English. After i done, then i have to post it into my blog. During the progress in order to get done those assignments, i have conducted some research and references from various sources. For example, one of my assignments required me to find essays and give my opinion what i understand the essays about. I gave my opinion and analyzed what the essays about and which types were those essays. This shows that continuous writing is the all time excellent way to sharpen anyone’s writing skill. 

      ii.            What do you think you need to know before you can complete the blogging activity successfully?

o   This is though question. Huhu. What i need to know before i start blogging is what kind of information i will put in my blog. Thus that, i must also know who’s my reader. Then i will what kind of content suits my readers. The information must relevant and easy to understand. On the other hand, i also consider what kind of fonts i choose in my blog, so the fonts i choose later won’t cause problem for readers to read. In short, the most important thing what i need to know before start blogging is do i understand the content in my work. Think first. That’s all.  

    iii.            Do you think that blog is a useful learning experience for you?

o   Yup and yes. Of course blogging really useful learning experience for me. Who will say no? During this blogging stuff i have learned many things related to learning process. For example, i learned few methods of writing and in today’s world that’s totally different. When i was a kid, i was exposed that the way of writing just on paper. But through blogging, i can improve and write on website and give feed back to those who gave comments. Furthermore, i also can surf for information easily and decorate my writing style. This totally advanced. Through blogging also i learned that is a new way of fun in writing.

    iv.            What are your problems in blogging?

o   Talking about problems, i had faced many problems during blogging. I didn’t know how to put picture, how to post comment, how to give feedback, how to create slideshow, and many more. Sometimes, during blogging process, suddenly internet problem occurred and what i have done i my blog just gone like that. So i have to redo it again. Even though, after i facing those problems i managed to solve it in the end. Thanks to my friends that totally help me a lot especially jamal. Thanks jamal.

      v.            Will you recommend your friends to do blogging?

o   Yes, i will. In my point of view, i had many benefits doing blogging so why won’t i tell my friends to do it too? I know blogging can improve myself then i will ask my friends to do the same so they can develop themselves in order to seek for knowledge and experience.

    vi.            Will u continue blogging after this? Even after SKBP over?

o   I think i will. I hope i will. In order to improve myself in writing and develop myself from computer literacy, i hope i will continue blogging. From the comments i have received, i know my friends out there want me to continue this. Is not like i can’t do blogging but the way of thinking will decide in future. So, for those who view my blog, please don’t get me wrong what I’m saying because i know blogging helps me a lot. I really it’s not the end for me doing blogging after this.

The purpose of a concordance is to study how words are used in a language, and to allow us to acquire a deeper understanding of meaning and usage than can be obtained from a dictionary.  As an example, consider the words tan and auburn.  Both can be used to mean a color; both indicate a brownish hue.  This much you can find in a dictionary.  But in a dictionary, you would not find that auburn is used frequently to describe hair color but never to describe skin color.  Nor would you find that tan is not used to describe hair.  But a concordance which uses a large amount of text from the target language could show you many occurrences of these two words at a glance (and other meanings as well, of course, such as the use of tan as an abbreviation of a trigonometric tangent).  In this way you could infer how native speakers use the words, and how these usages may be limited to specific situations.

Acquiring this sense of how words are actually used (as opposed to just what they mean) will help in creating the best possible translations.  For example, if you were reading an English story in which someone’s skin was described as auburn, you would immediately know that something unusual was intended: perhaps, for example, it is used for comic effect. 

 Your translation, then, would attempt to accomplish the intended comic effect in the target language.  If you didn’t know that auburn was not normally used to describe skin, but only know that it is a brownish-red color, you would probably just translate the word to the target-language equivalent and lose the intended comic effect.

Corpora

Clearly, the more text that goes into a concordance, the more useful the results will be.  Doing a concordance on a sentence or paragraph cannot tell you very much about patterns of usage in the language.  Most European languages already have electronic versions of tens or even hundreds of megabytes of text which are publicly available.  A single such collection is called a corpus – plural corpora. Some corpora consist of a broad selection of materials from the language – novels, plays, newspaper articles, transcriptions of authentic speech, and so on.  Others are specialized – religious documents or political writings or the works of a single author, etc.  Clearly, if you are studying the works of Shakespeare you would want his collected plays and poems in a corpus and nothing more.  If you are interested in the language of current events, you would want newspapers or political writings.  But if you are interested in written language in general, you would want as broad a selection as possible.

The less commonly taught languages generally do not have prepared corpora.  For this course, some medium-sized corpora have been prepared for your use  For the concordance programs supplied with this course, you will be able to create your own corpora by downloading documents from the internet or obtaining electronic version of texts in other ways.  Most likely these corpora will not reach megabyte size, but using your own data with our concordance programs should give you a good feel for the way that concordances can be used. In fact, the concordance programs used in this course were not developed to process megabytes of text data.  There are professional concordance programs available that can do that, and there are web sites (for some European languages, including English) that can access huge corpora.

From what did we mention at the beginning of this posting, a concordance is an alphabetical list of the principal words used in a book or body of work, with their immediate contexts. Because of the time and difficulty and expense involved in creating a concordance in the pre-computer era, only works of special importance, such as the Bible, Qur’an or the works of Shakespeare, had concordances prepared for them. Even with the use of computers, producing a concordance (whether on paper or in a computer) may require much manual work, because they often include additional material, including commentary on, or definitions of, the indexed words, and topical cross-indexing that is not yet possible with computer-generated and computerized concordances.

However, when the text of a work is on a computer, a search function can carry out the basic task of a concordance, and is in some respects even more versatile than one on paper. A bilingual concordance is a concordance based on text. A topical concordance is a list of subjects that a book (usually The Bible) covers, with the immediate context of the coverage of those subjects. Unlike a traditional concordance, the indexed word does not have to appear in the verse. The most well known topical concordance is Bible. The first concordance, to the Vulgate Bible, was compiled by Hugo de Saint Charo (d.1262), who employed 500 monks to assist him. In 1448 Rabbi Mordecai Nathan completed a concordance to the Hebrew Bible. It took him ten years. 1599 saw a concordance to the Greek New Testament published by Henry Stephens and the Septuagint was done a couple of years later by Conrad Kircher in 1602. The first concordance to the English bible was published in 1550 by Mr Marbeck, according to Cruden it did not employ the verse numbers devised by Robert Stephens in 1545 but “the pretty large concordance” of Mr Cotton did. Then followed the notorious Cruden’s Concordance and Strong’s Concordance.

Use in linguistics

Concordances are frequently used as a tool in linguistics that can be used for the study of a text, such as:

• comparing different usages of the same word
• analyzing keywords
• analyzing word frequencies
• finding and analyzing phrases and idioms
• finding translations of sub sentential elements, e.g. terminology, in bitexts and translation memories
• Creating indexes and word lists (also useful for publishing).

First of all, what is ICT? Who can define this? You? Your friends? Me?. According to “Discovering computers 2007” page 250, ICT is ICT is an acronym that stands for Information CommunicationsTechnology.

Second I want to share about the impact of using ICT /wireless technology and society. The impacts can be caused from four devices which are satellites, Bluetooth, PDA and handphone.

According to Wikipedia the term wireless is normally used to refer to any type of electrical or electronic operation which is accomplished without the use of a “hard wired” connection. Wireless communication is the transfer of information over a distance without the use of electrical conductors or “wires“.^[1] The distances involved may be short (a few meters as in television remote control) or very long (thousands or even millions of kilometers for radio communications). When the context is clear the term is often simply shortened to “wireless”. Wireless communications is generally considered to be a branch of telecommunications. Wireless technology has been developed and become more advanced in today’s world. For example, applications of wireless technology have developed security system, television remote control and cellular telephones. Advanced and modern televisions today use wireless to switch channels using wireless. Device that called remote control can provide wireless wave and the current goes straight into television and switch the channels. So people don’t have to stand up from chairs and go change the channels manually. Furthermore, the other example is cellular phone. This device uses waves of wireless to connect to other people. Waves that provides by cellular phone can receive signal from far distance and transmit back the signal received back then. Even though, wireless also cannot be exception causing hazardous to health and environmental. For instance, wireless communications and its possible relation bring to poor concentration, memory loss, nausea, premature senility and even cancer. So, wireless impacts such as good in technology and sometimes bad in society.

PDA is first device of using technology/wireless and society. PDA according to Wikipedia is Personal digital assistant, an electronic device which can include some of the functionality of a computer, a cellphone, a music player, and a camera

Phase-Doppler analyzer, a kind of instrument for measure particle velocity and size

Pushdown automaton, a type of abstract device in automata theory. Technology in PDA really advanced. For users who prefer typing to handwriting, some PDAs have a mini keyboard. Some PDAs allow users to speak data instructions into a device. Furthermore, PDAs with camera attach together can take pictures and view them. So technology of PDAs has brought many benefits in technology and society. People don’t have to carry computer everywhere instead of put PDAs in pocket. The functions of PDAs now can be the same of computer and sometimes people called computer mini.

The following device impact of using ICT /wireless technology and society is Bluetooth. According to Wikipedia Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs). Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices such as mobile phones, laptops, personal computers, printers, GPS receivers, digital cameras, and video game consoles over a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency.

By using Bluetooth people can send files and receive files when the device connects each other. So the impact of using Bluetooth in technology has created the medium of sharing information faster and easier. People don’t have to spend much money to send information and the transmission is faster than anyone can imagine it.

Next device that cause impact of using ICT /wireless technology and society is handphone. Handphone is device that been using for many years and has become more advance and there are many kind of handphones compare back than. The impact of this technology really strong and some people can live without it. This device is uses to connect people at the different place. Through handphone people can talk and keep in touch among them. This device has many functions now days such as take pictures, store information and can tune to radio. But in society, this technology sometime has been abuse by users. Some users use phone to cheat other people, and do danger things that can endanger others too. For example, some drivers use phone while driving on the road such as playing SMS or talking on the phone. So, the impact of technology and society of handphones bring harm and good.

Last one is satellite. According to Wikipedia a satellite is an object which has been placed into orbit by human endeavor. Such objects are sometimes called artificial satellites to distinguish them from natural satellites such as the Moon. The impact of using it due to many benefits such as navigational guide that can guide direction for drivers or travelers. Furthermore, satellite can monitor weather from above, so people can be prepared facing different kind of weather such as storming, raining, or maze.

In short, the impact of using ICT /wireless technology and society has brought many benefits and bad effects in today’s world. It depends on us how to overcome the problems. Technology has brought harm and good depends on us.

Everyone knows what computer nowdays. There are only certain people still suffer of computer literacy in today’s world. So, what I am going to define here, for me computer assisted writing is not just for finance, science, games, travel or government but through computer assisted writing, it can help too especially in education.

Let me just brief a little on what I was required to do. The task was to find an example of an online text that can be used to explain on one of this reading for pleasure, reading for information, reading for task completion, reading for instruction or incidental reading. I decided to do on reading for pleasure because it looks interesting.
Reading for pleasure is one of the ways to release our stress after studying or working for a long time. This kind of reading did not require full concentration because they just want to have fun or relaxing his/her mind. It also does not require any commitment or effort but it is more to our interest.
I have chosen online text as a medium, because there are a lot of stuffs to be read in it. We are moving in technology world, and yet, it will be a waste if we did not use the technology to find something in an easier way. So, online text is not difficult to find and it’s saves our time. I read on a website which is The Joke Yard, and i found some interesting funny stories in it. For your information, it has a lot of funny stories to be read at free time. You can just click on an icon or hyperlink to read funny stories that you are interested on.
First, I have read on these funny stories without realizing that there is more then 1 section in this website. As I realized it, I tried to move from a section to another and you know what I found? There are thousands of funny stories in each section!!! I was laughing all the day reading these stories. And for sure I will add this website into my favorite page in the internet.
Now let me show you some of the stories that make me laugh. I’m very sure that you will
also laugh after reading these stories.
Now let us have a look at these stories:

STORY 1

Three men were standing in line to get into heaven one day. Apparently it had been a pretty busy day, though, so St. Peter had to tell the first one, “Heaven’s getting pretty close to full today, and I’ve been asked to admit only people who have had particularly horrible deaths. So what’s your story?”

The first man replies: “Well, for a while I’ve suspected my wife has been cheating on me, so today I came home early to try to catch her red-handed. As I came into my 25th floor apartment, I could tell something was wrong, but all my searching around didn’t reveal where this other guy could have been hiding. Finally, I went out to the balcony, and sure enough, there was this man hanging off the railing, 25 floors above ground! By now I was really mad, so I started beating on him and kicking him, but wouldn’t you know it, he wouldn’t fall off. So finally I went back into my apartment and got a hammer and starting hammering on his fingers. Of course, he couldn’t stand that for long, so he let go and fell-but even after 25 stories, he fell into the bushes, stunned but okay. I couldn’t stand it anymore, so I ran into the kitchen, grabbed the fridge, and threw it over the edge where it landed on him, killing him instantly. But all the stress and anger got to me, and I had a heart attack and died there on the balchoy.”

“That sounds like a pretty bad day to me,” said Peter, and let the man in.
The second man comes up and Peter explains to him about heaven being full, and again asks for his story.

“It’s been a very strange day. You see, I live on the 26th floor of my apartment building, and every morning I do my exercises out on my balcony. Well, this morning I must have slipped or something, because I fell over the edge. But I got lucky, and caught the railing of the balcony on the floor below me. I knew I couldn’t hang on for very long, when suddenly this man burst out onto the balcony. I thought for sure I was saved, when he started beating on me and kicking me. I held on the best I could until he ran into the apartment and grabbed a hammer and started pounding on my hands. Finally I just let go, but again I got lucky and fell into the bushes below, stunned but all right. Just when I was thinking I was going to be okay, this refrigerator comes falling out of the sky and crushes me instantly, and now I’m here.”

Once again, Peter had to concede that that sounded like a pretty horrible death.
The third man came to the front of the line, and St. Peter asked for his story.
“Picture this,” says the third man, “I’m hiding naked inside a refrigerator…”

STORY 2

Two guys meet up in a bar. The first one asks, “Did your hear the news – Mike is dead??!!!”
“Woah, what the hell happened to him?”
“Well he was on his way over to my house the other day and when he arrived outside the house he didn’t brake properly and boom – He hit the curb, the car flipped over and he crashed through the sunroof – Went flying through the air and smashed through my upstairs bedroom window.”
“What a horrible way to die!”
“No no, he survived that, that didn’t kill him at all. So, he’s landed in my upstairs bedroom and he’s all covered in broken glass on the floor. Then, he spots the big old antique wardrobe we have in the room and reaches up for the handle to try to pull himself up. He’s just dragging himself up when bang, this massive wardrobe comes crashing down on top of him, crushing him and breaking most of his bones.”
“What a way to go, that’s terrible!”
“No no, that didn’t kill him he survived that. He managed to get the wardrobe off him and crawls out onto the landing, he tries to pull himself up on the banister but under his weight, the banister breaks and he goes falling down on to the first floor. In mid air, all the broken banister poles spin and fall on him, pinning him to the floor, sticking right through him.”
“Now that is the most unfortunate way to go!”
“No no, that didn’t kill him, he even survived that. So he’s on the downstairs landing, just beside the kitchen. He crawls in to the kitchen, tries to pull himself up on the stove, but reached for a big pot of boiling hot water, whoosh, the whole thing came down on him and burned most of his skin off him.”
“Man, what a way to go!”
“No no, he survived that, he survived that! He’s lying on the ground, covered in boiling water and he spots the phone and tries to pull himself up, to call for help, but instead he grabs the light switch and pulls the whole thing off the wall and the water and electricity didn’t mix and so he got electrocuted, wallop, 10,000 volts shot through him.”
“Now that is one awful way to go!”
“No no, he survived that…”
“Hold on now, just how the hell did he die?”
“I shot him!”
“You shot him? What the hell did you shoot him for?”
“He was wrecking my house.”

Above are just two examples of funny stories that i have copied from The Joke Yard’s page. It is really an entertaining website and I’m sure there are a lot of other websites that exist in the same objective. Just get the internet and type ‘funny stories’, there you have a lot of websites falling in your screen. Its just as easy as that!

 While planting each of these different types of trees differs in the details, all trees eventually end up in a hole. But not any old hole will do.

The most common mistake when planting a tree is a digging hole, which is both too deep and too narrow.  Too deep and the roots don’t have access to sufficient oxygen to ensure proper growth.  Too narrow and the root structure can’t expand sufficiently to nourish and properly anchor the tree.

As a general rule, trees should be transplanted no deeper than the soil in which they were originally grown.  The width of the hole should be at least 3 times the diameter of the root ball or container or the spread of the roots in the case of bare root trees.  This will provide the tree with enough worked earth for its root structure to establish itself.

When digging in poorly drained clay soil, it is important to avoid ‘glazing’.  Glazing occurs when the sides and bottom of a hole become smoothed forming a barrier, through which water has difficulty passing.  To break up the glaze, use a fork to work the bottom and drag the points along the sides of the completed hole. Also, raising the centre bottom of the hole slightly higher than the surrounding area.  This allows water to disperse, reducing the possibility of water pooling in the planting zone. 

Planting Balled and Burlapped Trees.Balled and burlapped (B & B) trees, although best planted as soon as possible, can be stored for some time after purchase as long as the ball is kept moist and the tree stored in a shady area.  B & B trees should always be lifted by the ball, never by the trunk.  The burlap surrounding the ball of earth and roots should either be cut away completely (mandatory, in the case of synthetic or plastic burlap) or at least pulled back from the top third of the ball (in the case of natural burlap).  Any string or twine should also be removed.  Backfill soil (combinations of peat moss, composted manure, topsoil, etc.) is then placed in the hole surrounding the tree just to the height of the ball or slightly lower to allow for some settling.  Be careful not to compress the back fill soil as this may prevent water from reaching the roots and the roots from expanding beyond the ball.top 

Planting Container Trees.Container trees (though subject to greater heat and drying conditions than B and B) can also be stored for a brief period of time after purchase as long as the soil in the container is kept moist and the tree stored in a shady spot.  The procedure for planting container trees is similar to that for B & B trees.  In the case of metal or plastic containers, remove the container completely.  In the case of fibre containers, tear the sides away.Once carefully removed from the container, check the roots.  If they are tightly compressed or ‘potbound’, use your fingers or a blunt instrument (to minimize root tearing) to carefully tease the fine roots away from the tight mass and then spread the roots prior to planting.  In the case of extremely woody compacted roots, it may be necessary to use a spade to open up the bottom half of the root system.  The root system is then pulled apart or ‘butterflied’ prior to planting.  Loosening the root structure in this way is extremely important in the case of container plants.  Failure to do so may result in the roots ‘girdling’ and killing the tree. At the very least, the roots will have difficulty expanding beyond the dimensions of the original container.  To further assist this, lightly break up even the soil outside the planting zone.  This allows roots that quickly move out of the planting zone to be more resilient as they anchor into existing surrounding soil conditions.Once the tree is seated in the hole, the original soil is then back-filled into the hole to the soil level of the container.  Again, remember not to overly compress the back-filled soil especially by tramping it with your feet.  Compress gently using your hands instead.top 

Planting Bare-Rooted Trees.Planting bare-rooted trees is a little different as there is no soil surrounding the roots.  Most importantly, the time between purchase and planting is a more critical issue.  Plant as soon as possible.  When purchasing bare-rooted trees, inspect the roots to ensure that they are moist and have numerous lengths of fine root hairs (healthy).  Care should be taken to ensure that the roots are kept moist in the period between purchase and planting.  Prune broken or damaged roots but save as much of the root structure as you can.To plant, first build a cone of earth in the centre of the hole around which to splay the roots.  Make sure that when properly seated on this cone the tree is planted so that the ‘trunk flare’ is clearly visible and the ‘crown’, where the roots and top meet, is about two inches above the soil level.  This is to allow for natural settling.

The text can gives new knowledge and it contains of examples that proof the ideas in the text. For instance, the text I have chosen give me information about how to planting a tree and it shows several steps which I can follow in order to planting a tree. So, all the steps are truth and can be done easily.   The language that being used in the text is a simple sentences that can be understood by anyone. This type of language suits for every age such as kids, teenagers, and adults. When I read this text I can easily understand the idea in the text and it was written in chronological order so it would not make me confuse when I read the text.        From this text I got information how to planting a tree in correct ways because in order to planting a tree I must follow several steps. All information about how to planting a tree can be found in this text and it also shows how to planting a tree by different types of trees. So I hope for those who want to know how to plating a tree then u should follow these steps. You can  write down the steps or just copy and paste the text given. Thank you.

 For the first time I feel quite excited having blog for myself and I was thinking to ask my friends to do blogging too. To be honest I am still fresh with blogging things so what I am trying to do here is exploring all the things inside and outside blogging such as how to publish comments, how to put pictures, how to decorate my blog and so many things that I have to learn so in the end I know exactly inside and outside blogging’s world. All these things I will learn by asking my friends and guidance from my lecturer.
